Inspired by the luxurious accessories created in Paris and London in the 1900s-1920s, which incorporated exquisite shagreen, precious metals, and exotic woods, our Emilia collection is highlighted by bonded leather drawer fronts embossed to mimic the look and feel of natural shagreen, paired with straight grain oak veneers and antiqued hardware. The shagreen comes in two exquisite finishes: a caviar grey and the so-called ivory white to match both the darker refined as well as a fresher and lighter interior. The skin of shark and ray, with an unusually granular surface, was used for centuries as a fancy leather for book bindings, pocketbooks, and small cases, as well as its more utilitarian uses in the hilts of swords. The use of shagreen was popularized in Europe by the French master leatherworker in the court of Louis XV of France Jean-Claude Galluchat. It quickly became a fashion among the French aristocracy and migrated throughout Europe by the mid-18th Century. The relatively simple, straight lines combined with these replicated luxurious materials creates a refined, rich, and elegant collection that feels both modern and classic.
For Emilia, no concessions were made when it comes to luxury or quality. Drawers have French dovetails on the front and English dovetails on the back plus full-extension, soft-close drawer guides and solid wood interiors. The collection includes a real showstopper: the bar cabinet with a mirrored back and glass-shelf interior.
